Essence

The self does not act and does not cause action; it only appears to when you mistake the city for its inhabitant.

Krishna is dismantling the idea that the self is the doer. Here he introduces a striking image: the body is a city of nine gates, and the self inside it neither acts nor triggers anything.


sarva-karmāṇi manasā sannyasyāste sukhaṃ vaśī | nava-dvāre pure dehī naiva kurvan na kārayan ||


सर्वकर्माणि मनसा संन्यस्यास्ते सुखं वशी । नवद्वारे पुरे देही नैव कुर्वन्न कारयन् ॥

1.Plain meaning

Having mentally renounced all actions, the self-controlled one rests in happiness within the body (the nine-gated city), neither acting nor causing action.

2.Line by line

sarva-karmāṇi manasā sannyasya

"Renouncing all actions mentally"
The renunciation here is not physical retirement. It is not quitting your job or leaving the battlefield. It happens at the level of manasā, in the mind. This is the shift from 'I am doing this' to 'this is happening through this body and mind.' The work continues. The difference is in who is holding the claim to it. It does NOT mean becoming passive or mentally checking out. It DOES mean dropping the part that says 'I am the owner and author of every result.'

āste sukhaṃ vaśī

"Rests in happiness, self-mastered"
Sukham here is not pleasure. It is the quiet steadiness that is the natural condition when the noise of compulsive ownership drops away. Vaśī means 'one who has mastered the instruments,' specifically the senses and the reactive mind. Not suppressed them. Mastered them, the way a skilled driver is master of a vehicle without fighting the steering wheel. The happiness is a side effect of that mastery, not something you chase. It just turns out that when you are not constantly at war with what is happening, a kind of ease is already there.

nava-dvāre pure

"In the city of nine gates"
The body is called a city (pura). The nine gates are the nine openings through which the body interfaces with the world: two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, one mouth, and two below. This is a map of how experience arrives. Everything you perceive, feel, and react to enters through one of these gates. The city is busy. Traffic flows constantly. But a city is not its residents. And the inhabitant of this city is not the gatekeeper at any of the nine entrances. The self lives in the city without being the customs officer at every gate.

dehī

"The one who inhabits the body"
Dehī means 'the body-dweller,' the one inside the deha (body). It is a careful word choice. Not 'the body itself' but the one who wears the body. This word quietly re-establishes the distinction the whole chapter rests on: there is a body that acts, and there is an awareness that inhabits it. Conflating the two is the root of the problem Krishna is addressing. When you say 'I am tired,' you might mean the body is tired. When you say 'I am angry,' you probably mean a pattern of mind fired up. But who is the 'I' noticing either? That notice-er is the dehī.

naiva kurvan na kārayan

"Neither acting nor causing action"
This is the core philosophical claim and the most easy to misread. It does NOT mean the person does nothing. The teaching is set on a battlefield. Action is happening constantly. What it DOES mean is that the self, properly understood, is not the source of action and does not cause action in the way a manager causes a result. Action arises from the interplay of the gunas, the body, the senses, and the mind. The self is the witness of that machinery, not its prime mover. The moment you deeply see this, you stop carrying the weight of being the personal author of every outcome. That is the mental renunciation of the first line, and this is what it actually means when lived.

3.What is really happening

A.The image does the heavy lifting

Krishna does not argue this point abstractly. He gives you a picture: a walled city with nine gates and someone living inside it quietly. The city is loud and active. The inhabitant is still. The image works because you already know the feeling of being calm while everything around you is moving fast. He is saying that is not the exception. That is your actual nature.

B.Mental renunciation is the harder thing

Dropping physical activity is easier to do and easier to fake. Dropping the mental claim to be the doer while still acting fully is the harder, realer thing. The person who acts completely and does not cling to the results as personal achievement or personal failure is operating from a different interior position than the one who does the same acts while gripped by ownership of them.

C.The nine gates are a diagnostic

The city image is also a practical map. If you want to notice where identification sneaks back in, watch the gates. At the moment of hearing something critical, or seeing something beautiful, or tasting something you crave, the self gets recruited into the transaction. The senses pull attention outward, then the reactive mind grabs it and says 'this is happening to me.' The practice is to notice that grab.

D.Neither acting nor causing: a counter-intuitive hierarchy

Ordinary understanding puts the self at the top of the action chain: I decide, I cause, things happen. Krishna inverts this. The self is not the cause; it is the witness of causes. The body and mind are instruments through which the world acts on itself. This is not fatalism. The instruments can be refined, directed, mastered. But they are not you.

4.Modern parallel

Person A is a startup founder during a crisis. Every fire that breaks out is personal. Every failure is a statement about who they are. Every success needs to be claimed loudly. The mental load of being the author of everything is crushing, and they are also terrible in a crisis because all their bandwidth is spent on self-protection. Person B runs the same company in the same crisis. They are completely engaged, totally present, making fast decisions. But they are not carrying the identity of 'the person who caused this' or 'the person who fixed this.' The work moves through them without the constant weight of ownership. They act more cleanly because they are not simultaneously managing their own story about the action.

Today's world · 2026

Hustle culture runs on the opposite assumption: that you are the engine, the author, the full cause of every outcome. Your brand, your output, your personal productivity score. The self as a one-person production facility.

This verse says that identification with being the doer is itself the friction. The city keeps running. The work keeps happening. What drops away is the exhausting mental commentary that you are personally responsible for every gate.

In an age of performance metrics and personal branding, the most radical thing is to act fully and not carry the claim.

What comes next
